The Future of Workforce Identity Security.
Deploying multi-factor authentication and single sign-on to support a wider drive for cost-efficiency and improved student and staff experiences
The key objective was to maximise customer experience without compromising operational standards, and deliver benefits for students, staff, partners and other IT service users alike.
Securing this transformed IT estate was a top priority, especially as cloud-based services were being introduced alongside legacy systems. This meant ensuring everyone could access systems and data safely, including from BYOD devices, by implementing single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
UoH sought a partner that could meet all its requirements. They chose the ProofID solution, based around the market-leading PingFederate and PingID products, deployed and managed by ProofID as a full IAM Managed Service.
This allowed SSO capabilities to be extended across a wide range of applications, including the university’s collaborative storage solution from Box, and Canvas, its new virtual learning environment. At a later stage, PingFederate will also be used to replace UoH’s aging central authentication service, paving the way for migration to Microsoft Office 365.
This solution provided 100% compatibility with Office 365 from all devices, irrespective of operating system or the location of the user and device. Access to Office 365 was also assured in the event of a local ISP outage.
Cutting the complexity from UoH’s IT estate, allied to confidence-building security measures like SSO and multi-factor authentication, have helped elevate students’ experiences to the next level. It’s also helped the University simplify access for external partners, such as the Hull York Medical School, which UoH runs in collaboration with the University of York.
