Overview

With more than 5500 students spread across two locations, the University of Chichester has to work hard to manage security and identity. This is especially the case for one of the UK’s smallest universities, where resources are limited and the student body is evolving all the time.

Its existing student identity platform was NetIQ Identity Manager, but the University wanted to take the opportunity to modernise its system and reduce support costs at the same time. From the new system, its key priorities were to simplify infrastructure and identity lifecycle workflows for all its joiners, movers and leavers, whether they were staff, students or third parties.

To make this happen, the University needed a comprehensive Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) platform - and the support of an expert partner for its implementation.

Searching for a modern identity platform that could reduce costs, simplify provisioning and synchronise data.

The Challenges

Joining the dots of identity, security, access and information - all within a single integrated ecosystem

The University chose Fastpath (formerly ideiio) as its IGA platform, favouring its simplicity, security, and its ability to deliver cost-effective identity management. These capabilities, allied to the flexibility of the platform as a SaaS, on-premise or hybrid solution, enabled ProofID to leverage its expertise and reduce the complexity and timeframe of the deployment.

Linking together the HR and IT systems through Fastpath meant the University’s staff and student information could be combined into a single source of truth. Combined with simplified provisioning, it meant that the right people could access the right information and systems - and be confident that it was accurate and useful for their needs.

Results

Smoother provisioning, satisfied users and a burden relieved from the IT department

Being able to automate provisioning across all applications has been transformative for the University of Chichester. A successful migration in a small timeframe outside of term time (in order to minimise disruption) meant that the University and its users could begin to reap the benefits as soon as the new academic term began.

Now, staff, students and third parties alike can gain appropriate access to the most up-to-date information faster than ever, without being held in a queue by an IT team struggling to meet peaks in demand.

  • Smooth integration between IT and HR data
  • Reduced implementation and deployment time
  • Easy provisioning, even at peak times of the year
  • Reduced strain and increased efficiency for the IT team
  • Enhanced user experience for all, including self-service
  • Significant long-term return on investment

“Automated provisioning across all applications, along with the user self-service portal, has significantly reduced the strain on IT support, increased our efficiency and enhanced user experience across the board.”
